The Russian court on Thursday sentenced one of the most prominent opposition politicians, the former mayor of Yekaterinburg, Yevgenii Roizman, to 14 days of arrest under the article for displaying “extremist” symbols on social networks.
In the social network “VKontakte” in a profile allegedly maintained on Roizman’s behalf, the video “Why Putin jailed Navalny” was reposted in February. According to the representatives of the law enforcement bodies, extremist symbolism was visible in the video – the badge of the anti-corruption fund banned in Russia.
Roizman explains that he has nothing to do with this publication and that he does not use the VKontakte social network.
The profile is not verified, that is, there is no evidence that it was maintained by Roizman.
The court, in turn, decided that the video was posted by a politician.
Roizman is currently banned from using the Internet. In the criminal case for the so-called discrediting of the Russian army, his known actions are prohibited. The case was initiated due to the former mayor’s anti-war statements.
The politician was detained by the police on Thursday morning. He was taken to the police station and from there to the court. He will spend the time until March 30 in the detention room.
Roizmans has actually been under house arrest since August 2022. It is forbidden for a politician to leave his residence at night, to use the Internet and social networks.
