Xavi admitted he was “uncomfortable” after Barcelona’s narrow Copa del Rey win against third-tier side Intercity on Wednesday night.
The Blaugrana managed to beat Intercity 4-3 but needed extra time to do so after Oriol Soldevila Puig scored a wonderful hat-trick in the second half. Xavi’s team would eventually win thanks to a 103rd-minute winning goal from youngster Ansu Fati.
Speaking to the press after the game, Xavi admitted his side’s lack of “strength” in the final third was cause for concern.
“We’ve suffered too much,” he explained. “We had many chances to win before extra time, but we didn’t. We can’t walk away happy. We lack the strength in both attack and defense to finish games. This lack of strength makes me uncomfortable. Especially in Offense On defense it can happen, but not on offense.
“I leave satisfied with the game, but not with the strength in the areas. We miss it.”
The boss did, however, react to claims that his side had almost been “ridiculed” by Intercity.
“I don’t think we bordered on the ridiculous,” he insisted. “Seven top-flight teams were eliminated, seven top-flight teams made a fool of themselves? It’s hard to win. I don’t think this question is about football.
“We didn’t stop the match when we were ahead. We could have gone 2-0, 4-2, but we made it difficult for ourselves.
“It’s the same feeling we had after the match against Espanyol. That was one warning and this is another.”
Barcelona they hope to impress much more when they face Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano on Sunday night. Barca are currently locked level on points at the top of the La Liga table with Real Madrid, while Atleti sit 11 points adrift in fourth.
