How many theatres are in the Theater District today? In March 1988, the New York City Board of Estimate approved the 28 landmark designations that had been approved in 1987 and 1988. Of these, both the interior and exterior of 19 theaters were protected, while only the interiors of seven theaters (including the Lyceum, whose exterior was already protected) and the exteriors of two theaters were approved. Several theater owners argued that the landmark designations impacted them negatively, despite Koch’s outreach to theater owners. The Shuberts, the Nederlanders, and Jujamcyn collectively sued the LPC in June 1988 to overturn the landmark designations of 22 theaters on the merit that the designations severely limited the extent to which the theaters could be modified. The New York Supreme Court upheld the LPC’s designations of these theaters the next year. The dispute went all the way to the Supreme Court of the United States, which upheld the designations in 1992. Read more: See details

Good afternoon.

Let’s begin… with the scenes… from the streets… this past weekend.

As you might’ve expected… life returned to the streets… and businesses were thriving.
As for me,… I went to a movie theater this weekend.
It felt so strange to be able to drink soda and eat popcorn,… which is allowed for people who have been fully vaccinated.
Other busy locations… filled with people over the weekend… were places of worship… like churches and temples.
They can fill up to 50 percent of their capacity… regardless of the vaccination status… of the gathered worshippers.
There is also no attendance cap… if all of the worshippers are fully vaccinated,… or if they submit negative PCR test results.
This is a notable departure… compared to when the toughest rules were in place.
Under previous restrictions,… places of worship were only allowed to fill… 10 percent of their total capacity… for in-person religious services.
The streets in general… were bustling with crowds of people,… with the cap on social gatherings… being raised to 10 people in the greater Seoul area… and 12 people in other regions.

And… I hear… restrictions are also being lifted… at… Han River… PARKS… here in Seoul?

That’s right. Starting today, drinking outside… at the parks lining the Hangang River… will be allowed once again.
Back in July,… health authorities had prohibited people from drinking at these areas… past 10 PM.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government lifted this ban on Monday,… hoping to give some breathing room for businesses… set up on the banks of the Hangang River.
People will be able to drink here after 10 PM…, as long as they wear their masks… and meet in groups… of no more than 10 people.

Meanwhile… what’s the latest… on the vaccination front?

As of Monday,… 76 percent of the country’s population… have been fully vaccinated.
And with Korea fast approaching… the 80 percent milestone,… health authorities have started administering booster shots… to tackle breakthrough cases in high-risk groups.
Beginning on this Monday,… recipients of the Janssen vaccine,… are getting their booster doses.
This group… had so far accounted… for the most breakthrough cases in the country.
Those who got their Janssen vaccine… at least 2 months ago… are eligible for the extra jab,… which comes to around 1-point-4-8 million people.
Those eligible can choose between… Pfizer and Moderna vaccines… and those over the age of 30… can opt to get another Janssen jab.

And on the treatment front… do tell us… a bit… about the ANTIVIRAL PILLS… by Merck and Pfizer.

The hottest pills in town… are those made by Pfizer,… called “Paxlovid”,… and Merck’s “Molnupiravir.”
Let me explain how each one works
…if you’ll just look at the graph… that is up on the screen right now.
First, both Paxlovid and Molnupiravir have shown to be quite effective… in lowering the number of hospitalizations and deaths from COVID-19.
Pfizer’s Paxlovid cuts the risk… by 89 percent,… whereas Merck’s Molnupiravir reduced it by around half.
Both are five-day courses,… and you need to take 6 pills a day for Paxlovid,… and 8 a day for Molnupiravir.
Pfizer is hoping to distribute enough pills… to cover 180 thousand people… by the end of this year,… which will later be expanded to 50 million.
And Merck is set on distributing 10 million people’s worth… by the end of this year,… and 20 million by 2022.

And… how many of these pills… have been secured by South Korea… thus far?

On Sunday,… health authorities said they would secure a total of 404 thousand courses of the treatment… by the end of this month.
Back in September,… authorities secured some 200 thousand courses from Merck, and 70 thousand courses from Pfizer.
They said talks to secure an extra 134 thousand courses are still ongoing with Pfizer, Merck…and Swiss company Roche… that is also working on a similar drug.
If the deals go ahead as planned,… these pills may become available in Korea… within the first quarter of next year.

That’s good to know.
Right then… thank you… for now… but… do stay… for the extended talks.
