Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in the largest pan you’ve got over a medium to high setting. Once the oil is hot, pop in your sausages and turn them regularly throughout. After about 5 minutes, you can go ahead and toss your mushrooms in and continue to cook them, along with the sausages, for another 7-8 minutes. Sausages, tomatoes, and mushrooms.

There are some essentials and some optional ingredients.

Essentials: Bacon, sausage, eggs (fried, poached or scrambled), fried bread. Plus of course toast and tea.

Options: Grilled tomatoes, mushrooms*, baked beans*, sauteed potatoes, hash browns*, bubble & squeak*, black pudding*, lambs kidneys.

Those items marked with a * are items I am not keen on with a Full English.

I will have baked beans with it but only if they are in separate dish so the ‘bean juice’ doesn’t pervade everything else and just make a soggy mess. I am happy to just have lots of tomatoes instead of beans, I think that goes back to Army days when it was ‘beans or tomatoes’, both wasn’t an option.

Hash Browns are an American import that I feel just doesn’t work with an FE breakfast. I don’t mind them but just not with breakfast.

The beauty of a Full English is that there is no right or wrong, you can just mix and match to create what you prefer.

One point where a lot of people will disagree with me on is that I believe that neither ketchup nor brown sauce have any place on a Full English. Their strong flavour just masks the wonderful flavours of the food. What I will have on a Full English is a light sprinkle of Worcester Sauce, that enhances the flavours and doesn’t mask them.
