When the mask is not mandatory, not even surgical: all the exceptions – RB

One of the most important innovations of this beginning 2022, characterized by a strong resurgence of the virus in terms of infections, especially due to the new Omicron variant (here where it is most widespread and here how long the incubation lasts), is the extension of the obligation to wear the mask in new contexts not previously foreseen.

In fact, as explained Franco Locatelli , president of the Superior Health Council and coordinator of the CTS in his speech at the conference print on the latest anti-Covid measures adopted by the government, the message that the Omicron variant “is characterized by the inability to cause serious illness is not correct”.

“Omicron is less dangerous than Delta, but it has the ability to induce serious and even fatal disease” he clarified, citing a South African study that recorded 256 people who lost their lives from the Omicron variant: the vast majority of them had more than 60 years of age.

It is therefore not correct to speak of the “cooling” of the virus, says Locatelli, because it can only be mild with a vaccine, and in any case it is not obvious.

When and where the mask is mandatory

The obligation to have and wear masks is valid throughout Italy, even outdoors and also in the white area at least until 31 January. But when and where exactly should the mask be worn? Many are asking RB, especially after the new rules come into force, which is why we try to summarize here in a simple way.

Respiratory protective devices must be compulsorily worn outdoors throughout the national territory (it is not known again if the measure is extended after 31 January, but given the infections it appears very probable). Furthermore, they must be worn in all indoor places other than your home, including public transport , namely by bus, metro, tram, train, plane, ship and ferry and any other public transport.

However, the use of masks is strongly recommended even inside private homes in the presence of non-cohabiting people.

As regards the performance of the work activity, the mask is mandatory in the situations provided for by the specific sector protocols, which vary from sector to sector depending on the type of work.

When it is not mandatory to have a mask

The obligation is not however foreseen in some cas i, namely for:

children under 6 years of age people who, due to their disability or pathology, cannot wear a mask operators or people who, to assist a person with disabilities, cannot in turn wear a mask, such as who should speak sign language with deaf people. Furthermore, it is not mandatory to wear a mask, both outdoors and indoors:

while exercising; while eating or drinking, in the places and times where it is allowed; when, due to the characteristics of the places or the factual circumstances, isolation from non-cohabiting people is continuously guaranteed.

When the FFP2 mask is mandatory and the surgical one is not enough

Another question you are often asking is whether there is a requirement to use a specific type of mask. And the answer is yes, at least in certain contexts.

The new rules introduced by the Draghi government to contain the fifth wave provide for the obligation to wear the FFP2 type mask in some specific situations and at least until 31 March , date, by hour, of the end of the state of emergency ( here how much FFP2 masks really protect us and how they are different from surgical masks). Here are which ones:

shows open to the public which take place indoors or outdoors in theatrical halls, concert halls, cinemas, entertainment and live music venues and in other similar venues sporting events and competitions that take place indoors or outdoors access and use of commercial flights, ships and ferries used for interregional transport services, trains used in interregional passenger transport services, Intercity , Intercity Night and High Speed, buses and coaches used for transport services between more than two Regions, buses and coaches used for rental services with driver, cable cars, gondola lifts and chairlifts when used with closing of the windscreen domes, and all means of local or regional public transport people who have had close contact co n a confirmed positive case for Covid and which, on the basis of the regulations in force, are not subject to quarantine but only to the so-called self-monitoring, until 10 ° day following the last contact with the positive person. Surgical masks must be worn in the context of economic and social activities , such as in bars and restaurants, tourist activities and accommodation facilities, wellness centers, personal services such as hairdressers and beauticians, retail trade, museums, exhibitions, cultural clubs, conferences and congresses, etc., in the situations provided for in the sector protocols.

In all other situations, except where expressly provided, the so-called community masks can also be used, i.e. in fabric, disposable, washable, possibly self-produced, as long as they are in multilayer materials suitable for providing an adequate barrier and able to guarantee comfort and breathability, shape and adherence adequate to cover the face, from the chin to above the nose.

In church only with FFP2?

A separate chapter concerns the church. Is the mask mandatory in the church ? The answer is yes because it is an indoor place. The CEI also recommends its use for all activities organized by ecclesiastical bodies. But which?

The CEI-Government Protocol of 7 May 2020, integrated with the subsequent indications of the Technical Scientific Committee, does not specify the type , whether surgical or FFP2. “Certainly the latter has a high filtering power and is recommended, as the authorities are reiterating these days” says the CEI.

However, even if at the moment there is the obligation to wear the surgical or community one, the general secretariat of the Bishops has strongly recommended the FFP2 mask in church
