Protesters on the tarmac at Geneva Airport briefly disrupted air traffic on Tuesday before operations gradually resumed, the airport said, as dozens of climate activists grounded a nearby business jet convention.

“Due to the incursion of people on the runway, air traffic was temporarily interrupted. From 12:40 it gradually resumed [local time]the official Geneva Airport Twitter account said.

The warning came as environmental groups said some 100 climate activists from 17 countries disrupted the nearby European Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition, Europe’s largest private jet sales trade show.

In a joint statement, Greenpeace, Stay Grounded, Scientist Rebellion and Extinction Rebellion said activists were peacefully occupying jets displayed for the event at Geneva airport.

About a dozen police officers swiftly intervened to remove the activists, including some who had attached themselves to the planes, the ATS news agency said.

Local police said about 80 people had been arrested.
