Volkswagen’s decision not to invest in the modernization of the Golf, Europe’s best-selling car for decades, clearly indicates that the car manufacturer’s investments are shifting from internal combustion engines to the production of electric vehicles.
By 2030, Volkswagen aims for 80 percent electric sales in Europe and 55 percent in North America. By then, the group aims for 50 percent electric sales worldwide.
The automaker plans to keep the Golf name for a future electric model, but that could not go on sale until 2028 at the earliest, Schaefer said.
According to the manufacturer’s plans, 10 new electric models will be launched on the market by 2026, including a battery model cheaper than 25,000 euros.
