Vodafone 5G Reality, first impressions: we tested the Spanish Vodafone metaverse that will arrive in 2022

After a first approach to augmented reality with Nreal Light , Vodafone has decided to bet heavily on this segment and has announced the first virtual and interactive commercial solution for customers on 5G. Its name is Vodafone 5G Reality and its objective is to bring us closer to the metaverse , that concept of virtual world that is flagged by Facebook but many other companies are joining.

The operator’s idea is to market it during the first semester of 2022, first for Vodafone customers and, later, for non-customers. In Engadget Mobile, we have already had the opportunity to test its possibilities , ranging from attending a concert to traveling around the world, to watching a movie in a movie theater, playing games or participating in an escape room. All in a virtual way and with a high social component.

Better with glasses than through a mobile

Taking advantage of the ultra-low latency and high speed of the 5G network, the new Vodafone 5G Reality service aims to make us enjoy fully immersive experiences virtually. The platform has been created in collaboration with Optiva Media and Virtual Voyagers, and it is already beginning to be tested with the first Vodafone clients, although, as we said, it will be open to the general public during the first half of 2022.

Vodafone 5G Reality can be enjoyed both from a smartphone and through Augmented Reality or Virtual Reality glasses, so that the experience is adapted depending on the device. In our case, we have tested the service with the Oculus Quest 2 glasses and with the Galaxy Z Fold3 from Samsung, and let’s not fool ourselves, the immersive experience is felt with the glasses . With mobile phones, the platform is no more than just one more example of augmented reality, such as Google 3D animals that we see with our phone.

However, aware that not everyone has glasses of this type, Vodafone has developed a mobile app that adapts the augmented reality experience to the screen of our terminal . Although the app is provisional and is still in the testing phase, it offers a very clear and intuitive interface from which we can scroll vertically to enter the different sections: cinema, trips, concerts, etc.

But, as to really enjoy the experience, you have to wear glasses, here we go. We put on the Oculus Quest 2 ( 349 euros ) with the Vodafone 5G Reality application loaded, we grab its two controllers and what do we find? A side menu with seven options and a large screen where it goes opening each one of them so that we can select the content that we want to launch.

These contents, for the moment, are very limited, but Vodafone has committed to to expand them with a view to its commercial launch . In Cinema, there is a single movie that takes you fully into a movie theater to watch on a surround screen; the feeling is so realistic, that it was not long before we fell when trying to sit in one of the virtual seats.

In Relax, it is possible to swim among whales, well, they swim around you because it is a video 360 degrees in which you cannot interact. Upon entering Concerts, we can only attend a performance by the Nancy Rubias for now , Mario Vaquerizo’s musical group. But hey, it sounds good, and we can see on the screen how we wave and raise our virtual hands without any delay.

Something similar happens in Gaming, where there is only one title available to play -‘Tiki Congas’-, and in Travel, where We can only visit the island of Lanzarote . Of course, once there, we can explore different places and even do a diving course in the deep sea. In Adventure, for now, it is possible to walk among dinosaurs or participate in an Escape Room inside a pyramid.

As you can see, the current contents are quite scarce, but we assure you that the experience is very satisfactory thank you, let’s not forget, to the advantages of 5G in terms of speed and latency. Navigating through the menus is simple, not only because of its intuitive interface, but also because the precision of the pointer is very good. Simply point a controller and pull the trigger to accept any option.

At the moment, you can meet nine other people in the metaverse, but the operator also plans to increase that number

Special mention to the social section of the platform. According to Vodafone, you have at your disposal 1. 500 avatars to create your own , customize it to your liking and interact with your friends in real time (waving or shaking hands, for example). At the moment, you can meet nine other people in the metaverse, but the operator also plans to increase that number.

In short, we are facing a service with great potential ahead that works perfectly as a gateway to the famous metaverse . Vodafone assures that it has been working on it for more than a year, but there are still a few months left for its final commercialization, time that, we hope, will be used to expand its library of experiences.

The good? That the Vodafone 5G Reality platform is an open environment that allows the integration of local and international content from other providers and companies. And that can make things much easier for you.

It remains to be seen also the conditions of commercialization of the service . For now, Vodafone has confirmed to us that it will be available first for its customers and later for users of other operators, although, yes, its customers will have exclusive advantages (we do not yet know what they will be).

What we do know is that there will be the possibility of subscribe to the full service or pay for a certain experience specific. If prices are affordable, Vodafone 5G Reality can become one of your great assets for 2022.
