In February, the General Prosecutor’s Office issued a warning to the “Union of Latvian Russians” (LKS) party in connection with its actions that may threaten the security of the state and society, according to the information available to Latvian Television (LTV).
As the LTV program “Panorāma” reported, the Kremlin’s propaganda messages, justification of violations of international law, disinformation and other violations were found in the materials circulated by LKS over time.
Already in March of last year, the State Security Service (VDD) issued one warning to the party. However, the situation has not changed. Even new messages have arrived, for example, efforts to tune the population of Latvia against helping Ukraine.
Last December, the VDD informed the General Prosecutor’s Office about the violations found in the operation of the LKS, which sent the party a prosecutor’s warning on February 24 of this year. Thus, the political force is one step away from the court deciding on its termination, LTV reported.
The party has also been instructed to prevent, that is, to delete, the distribution of the information specified in the warning on social networks, including on the LKS website.
Prosecutor General Juris Stukāns revealed in LTV’s “Today’s Question” program that LKS representatives sent a detailed explanation to the prosecutor’s office and expressed regret for what they had done.
LKS chairman Miroslavs Mitrofanovs confirmed to LTV that such a warning had been received and that the party had taken it into account.
“In general, we had more than 1,200 publications in this network alone. The questions concern only seven publications. All of them have already been deleted from the Internet and it is impossible to find them,” explained the chairman of LKS.
If new violations are committed within a year after receiving the warning, then according to the Law on Political Parties, the court will be able to decide on the termination of the party’s activity.
As reported, an initiative signed by more than 10,000 people to close LKS has been stuck in the Saeima since autumn. The MPs interviewed at that time promised not to let it die down.
The initiative has been handed over to the National Security Commission of the Saeima, headed by NA representative Jānis Dombrava, but its further progress has not yet been seen.
Last June, amendments to the Law on Political Parties adopted in the final reading of the Saeima entered into force, which stipulates that parties in their activities are prohibited from opposing the independence and territorial indivisibility of Latvia or other democratic countries.
In its activities, the party is prohibited from opposing the independence and territorial indivisibility of Latvia or other democratic countries, expressing or distributing proposals for the violent amendment of the institutions of Latvia or another democratic state, calling for non-compliance with laws if their non-compliance threatens national security, public safety or order, preaching violence or terrorism , open Nazi, fascism or communist ideology, propagate war, carry out actions aimed at inciting national, ethnic, racial, religious hatred or discord, praise or call for criminal offences.
If the party’s activity contradicts the Constitution, laws or other regulatory enactments, threatens state or public security, or contradicts any of the aforementioned prohibitions, then the party’s activity can be terminated by the court.
