Minister of Education and Science Anda Čakša (“New Unity”) calls the actions of the Rēzekne City Council unacceptable, continuing the tradition started three years ago of financing additional Russian language and literature learning in optional classes in schools and allocating 21,000 euros for it this year, Panorāma reports.
The State Service for the Quality of Education informed that the number of optional lessons is not determined in the regulatory acts, the study load specified in the Law on General Education applies only to the mandatory study hours.
Rēzekne vice-mayor Aleksej Stecs explained: “We are talking about the wishes of the parents, and based on the wishes of the parents, we decided whether or not to allocate the specific funding for the specific purpose.”
Arnolds Drelings, head of the Rēzekne Education Board, said that if “schools want to have additional lessons in Latvian, we will definitely try to support this initiative, but so far there is no such initiative from the parents”.
