About the first heart transplant performed this year, the doctors of the Stradiņa hospital say that it was the most extreme transplant in history, Panorāma reports.

The news about the donor came on March 8, when an impassable blizzard also cut the sky and the ground. However, doctors and nurses from Riga went to Latgali through the swirls of snow to bring a new heart to a patient in the middle of the night with an Air Force helicopter.

Until the last moment, it was not known whether the National Armed Forces Air Force helicopter would fly in the crazy blizzard. But just when the doctors were heartily ready to go, the blizzard subsided.

For Ilmar, who himself is from Rēzekne, March 9 became his second birthday. A friend of the son-in-law took them in a crazy blizzard to Riga, where Ilmar had a heart transplant.

Cardiac surgeons emphasize that in Latvia, as in other countries, there are two big problems related to organ transplantation – there is a lack of donor organs and not everyone who needs this operation has been recognized.
