Russian diplomats are expelled from Germany, Russia is considering retaliatory measures

According to the Moscow Foreign Ministry’s statement on Saturday, a decision was made in Germany to expel Russian diplomats en masse.

Russian foreign affairs spokeswoman Maria Zakharova also indicated that Russia is preparing to take countermeasures, which means that Moscow will also expel German diplomats from the country. The information did not address whether the relevant Russian diplomats had already left Germany or whether they would be expelled in the near future.

The maximum number of diplomats representing Germany in Russia will be significantly limited, the German ambassador was already informed about this at the beginning of April

Zakharova said.

Russia and Germany have already mutually expelled diplomats, and representation in both countries is already at a reduced level.

On Saturday morning, a special Russian government plane landed in Berlin, the plane is expected to return to Moscow in the afternoon. It is not known whether this has anything to do with the expulsion of Russian diplomats.

Spain sends six Leopard-2 tanks to Ukraine

Within days, Spain will send six Leopard-2 A4 tanks to Ukraine out of the previously promised ten, the Spanish Foreign Minister announced.

“As long as it is necessary, we will support Ukraine,” stated José Manuel Albares in an interview published on Saturday by the German Funke media group.

He emphasized that the aid includes humanitarian assistance, the reception of refugees and the delivery of weapons.

After the first six tanks, which will be delivered within days, the remaining four tanks will be delivered to Kiev later in a second shipment.

In recent weeks, 55 Ukrainian soldiers participated in the training organized for the use of Leopard tanks in Spain.

Madrid has a total of 347 Leopard tanks at its disposal: 108 are the older, A4 type, and 239 are the newer, A6 model.

Spain previously announced that the new type of tanks will not be sent to Ukraine, as Madrid needs them for the country’s own defense.

The Ukrainian armed forces have already received Leopard-2 tanks from Germany, Canada and Poland. (MTI)

Regular detonations near the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) experts stationed at Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) have heard gunshots almost every day for the past week and were once told to shelter in place due to potential threats from continued military activity in the area. to look for – said Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi.

“I saw clear signs of military preparations in the area when I visited the Zaporizhzhya NPP just over three weeks ago. Since then, our experts at the site have often reported hearing detonations, sometimes indicating intense firing not far from the site. I am deeply concerned because of the situation at the power plant,” he said.

Adding to the nuclear safety and security risks is that the ZNPP continues to rely on the only operational 750 kilovolt (kV) transmission line for external power for reactor cooling and other essential nuclear safety and security functions. Before the conflict, the power plant had four such external transmission lines at its disposal.

The IAEA group also reported that the current situation at the ZNPP significantly affects the power plant’s maintenance capacity. The management of the power plant informed the IAEA experts that in 2022 the scope of maintenance carried out during shutdowns in all units has decreased compared to planned, which is due to the reduction in the number of maintenance personnel, the lack of external contractors who perform a significant part of the work, and the lack of spare parts required for maintenance including critical components.
