A protester and a policeman were killed on Sunday in Sweida, Syria, as security forces cracked down on a rare demonstration against poor living conditions.
Hundreds of people showed up for the protest, with some throwing stones at a government building, eventually breaking in and tearing up a photo of the president, Bashar-Al-Asad.
Local media reported that four other people were hospitalized. The region is home to the Druze ethnic minority, who have so far largely stayed out of the country’s civil war.
