Portugal established themselves as a leading contender to win the World Cup on Tuesday with a stunning 6-1 win against Switzerland in the round of 16.

And perhaps the best thing is that they did it after leaving Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench. If you want to go and relive that madness, click here and scroll.

But we will focus on what happened during and after the match here. To kick off the game and play, Ronaldo’s replacement, 21-year-old Goncalo Ramos, scored a goal at the near post from Yann Sommer.

Soon after, Pepe became the oldest goalscorer in World Cup knockout stage history with a header from a Bruno Fernandes corner.

Shortly after the break, Ramos secured his second goal of the night with a tap-in at the near post, while Raphael Guerreiro finished off a fine counter-attack in style with a powerful finish on goal.

Switzerland managed a comeback through Manuel Akanji, before Ramos scored his hat-trick with a delicious shot on Sommer.

With a quarter-final place in the bag, Fernando Santos launched Ronaldo for the final 20 minutes or so. In typical Ronaldo fashion, he slammed a free kick into the wall and scored a goal that was about 100 yards offside.

There was still time for Portugal to score a sixth goal, with Rafael Leao completing the scoring.

So despite all the improvements Portugal have made without him, the focus is still on Ronaldo. Do you think he will be bitter about it?
