The second round of the presidential election is going well

The second round of the presidential election in Turkey on Sunday went smoothly until noon local time (until 11 a.m. Central European time), and there were no reports of disturbances.

The second round in which Incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and main opposition candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu face each other, became necessary because none of the candidates managed to obtain an absolute majority in the first round on May 14. This Sunday, only the two best-ranked candidates will measure themselves.

Citizens over the age of 18 can go to the polls from 8 a.m. local time (7 a.m. CET) to 5 p.m. (4 p.m. CET).

According to the election law, which has been in force since 1961, the publication of any kind of news, speculation and comments regarding the election itself and its results is prohibited in all media outlets until 6:00 p.m. local time. This also applies to participation.

The Turkish media mostly publishes information on what citizens should take with them to the polling stations, as well as what other restrictions on the sale and public consumption of alcohol and the carrying of weapons are in force in the country until midnight.

So far, neither Erdogan nor Kilicdaroglu have cast their votes.
