The White House on Thursday welcomed possible talks between Ukrainian and Chinese Presidents Volodymyr Zelensky and Xi Jinping, while urging Beijing that it should not stick to a one-sided view of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
“We think it would be very good if the two of them would talk,” White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters when asked to comment on a Wall Street Journal report that Zelenska and Xi were expected to meet for the first time since the full-scale Russian invasion. Conversations.
“We support and have supported” contacts, Kirby said.
He expressed concern about the possibility that China might insist on a ceasefire in Ukraine, stating that it would only encourage Russian aggression.
There is no official confirmation that the talks between Zelensky and Xi could take place yet, however, a telephone conversation between Chinese and Ukrainian Foreign Ministers Qin Gan and Dmytro Kuleba already took place on Thursday.
According to media reports, Xi plans to travel to Moscow to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin, his ally.
The United States cannot confirm reports that the China-Russia summit will take place, Kirby said, while urging Beijing not to push for a resolution to the conflict that “reflects only the Russian perspective.”
China’s emphasis on the need for a cease-fire “sounds perfectly reasonable” but may actually mean “ratifying Russian conquests.”
“It would actually be a recognition of Russia’s gains” and “would be another long-standing violation of the UN Charter,” Kirby said.
A ceasefire would allow Moscow to strengthen its position in Ukraine, rebuild its forces, retrain them so they can resume attacks at a time of their choosing, Kirby said.
A lasting peace “cannot be one-sided, and it absolutely must include and take into account the Ukrainian perspective and Ukrainian decisions,” Kirby summarized.
