Record women’s biathlon world champion Marte Olsbu Röiseland of Norway will retire after the last race of the season this Sunday.

The 32-year-old confirmed media reports at a press conference on Tuesday.

“Biathlon will always be in my heart,” she said, visibly moved. “I am proud of what I have achieved. I have achieved more than I could have dreamed of.”

Röiseland will compete in the last three races of his career at his home World Cup event at Holmenkollen in Oslo from Friday.

Last year, in the spiritual home of Nordic skiing, he won the overall World Cup but contracted the coronavirus at the subsequent end-of-season party.

The consequences of the infection caused her health problems for many months and she was only able to start this season late.

However, she was ready in time for the world championships and won two gold and one bronze medals in Oberhof, Germany for a record haul of 13 golds.

The three-time Olympic champion of 2022 has won a total of seven Olympic and 17 world medals.
