Tuesday 10 May at 8.30 pm on Rai 1 (on TV or online on RaiPlay) will be broadcast the first of the three evenings of the 66th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, the most famous and popular music competition in the world, which this year will be held at the PalaOlimpico in Turin. It will be conducted by the TV presenter Alessandro Cattelan, the Italian singer Laura Pausini and the Lebanese-British singer Mika. The competing countries should have been 41, but they will be 40 due to the expulsion of Russia following the invasion of Ukraine.
Since 2008 the competition has been divided into two semifinals (Tuesday and Thursday, lasting approximately 2 hours) and a final (Saturday, lasting 4 hours). During the first semifinal on Tuesday 17 competitors will perform and instructions will be given to the public to vote: in general, the regulation provides that you can never vote for the song brought from your country. The 10 most voted competitors will be able to access the final on Saturday together with the 10 most voted competitors on Thursday evening.
The Italian singers Mahmood and Blanco, who won at the Sanremo festival and who represent Italy with “Shivers”, they are automatically admitted to the final and will therefore only perform on Saturday evening. The reason is that, together with France, Germany, United Kingdom and Spain, Italy is part of the so-called “big five”, that is the countries that first financed the competition and which are still among the main organizers today, and for this has an advantage in the race.
On Tuesday evening Diodato (Italian competitor of the 2020 edition), Dardust, Benny Benassi and Sophie and the Giants will perform as guests.
Contestants on Tuesday night will perform in this order:
