Gaz-System talks with the government to accelerate the construction of a floating liquefied gas terminal
As stated by Tomasz Stępień, president of Gaz-System, talks are underway with the government to speed up the construction of a floating liquefied gas terminal (FSRU) near Gdansk. -It is graduable, it depends on how we define the acceleration-he said. It was initially thought that the new terminal would be built by the end of 2027.
– We have presented a plan for the end of 2025 and there is also the possibility of accelerating it more, but there are a number of conditions that should be met for this to happen – he explained. Gaz-System’s president predicts that a special act will be needed to make the investment possible.
When asked about the capacity of the terminal, Tomasz Stępień replied that “it will be as we finally decide, there will be a decision not only from Poland, but also from the region”. Originally it was said that the FSRU terminal could be adapted to carry out regasification at a level corresponding to approximately 6.1 billion cubic meters of gaseous fuel per year.

GIPL consists in eliminating the so-called energy islands
The GIPL pipeline, 508 km long, connected the gas transport systems of Poland and Lithuania, managed by the operators GAZ-SYSTEM SA and AB Amber Grid. From 1 May, the interrupted capacity for the direction from Lithuania to Poland will amount to 2.4 GWh / h, which corresponds to 1.9 billion cubic meters per year. The capacity for the direction from Poland to Lithuania will be 2.6 GWh / h, which corresponds to 2 billion cubic meters per year. GIPL will reach its full capacity in October 2022.
The GIPL project was aimed at the construction of a two-way gas pipeline connecting the natural gas transport systems of Poland and Lithuania in order to eliminate the so-called energy islands, i.e. regions not yet integrated with the EU energy market. , such as Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Finland.
The construction of the pipeline is an investment that has the status of “Project of Common Interest” (PCI – Project of Common Interest) and is co-financed by the European Union as part of the “Connecting Europe Facility” (CEF – Connecting Europe Facility) Europe Facility) and “Trans-European Energy Networks” – Energy – TEN-E).
