Current electronic devices, such as smartphones, tablets and computers, make use of the so-called DRAM , which stands for Dynamic Random Access Memory . It is a type of volatile memory that retains information only until the device is turned off, and the information is continuously updated: read, written or overwritten.

However, Samsung has announced that it has become the first chip maker in the world to introduce a revolutionary new technology that will replace DRAM, greatly improving the performance of devices and their energy efficiency. The document in which the Korean giant talks about this important innovation was published on the website of the scientific journal Nature and will soon be distributed also in paper form. The research is the result of the collaboration between Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology, Samsung Doundy and Samsung Semiconductor R&D, and the minds of Seungchul Jung, Donhee Ham and Sang Joon Kim.

Samsung, how the new memories are made

Unlike DRAMs, the new MRAM ( Magnetoresistive Random Access Memory ) developed by Samsung are non-volatile memories and can therefore keep the data even in the absence of power supply . This is made possible by saving the information on magnetic media , rather than on electrically powered media.

In a certain sense, the in-memory system behaves like the human brain , in which the processing part is managed by the memory through the network of n$ns . According to what Samsung reveals, thanks to the similarity of operation with the human brain, MRAM will allow the creation of chips for artificial intelligence algorithms much more advanced.

Samsung, when will the new memories arrive

To replace the current DRAMs, various researches and studies have been carried out which led to the development of various solutions. We are talking above all about PRAM (Phase-change Random Access Memory) and RRAM (Resistive Random Access Memory), which have already been put to the test unlike MRAM.
