From today until March 28 in the Baltic Sea, the headquarters and supply ship A-53 “Virsaitis” of the Naval Minesweeper Squadron as part of the Baltic Naval Squadron (BALTRON) will participate in the international military exercises “Baltic MCM EX 23” organized by the German Navy.

A total of seven ships from Germany, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia will participate in the “Baltic MCM EX 23” exercise.

The aim of the training is to train the maritime, navigation, communications, ship protection and anti-mine warfare elements of the ship group, as well as staff cooperation in a multinational environment. The ships will also search for and destroy explosive objects left over from the previous world wars, continuing to improve shipping safety in the Baltic Sea.

BALTRON is one of the longest-lasting cooperation projects of the Baltic States, which has been implemented since 1998. The purpose of this cooperation format is to provide a permanent rapid response capability at sea in peacetime and in crisis. BALTRON’s first commander was sea captain Ilmārs Lešinskis from the Latvian Navy.
