Maija, mother of two children [vārds mainīts] in the “Forbidden Technique” program, she shared her birth experience, giving birth to a baby in the Riga Maternity Hospital. Although her gynecologist indicated the possibility of a caesarean section in the documents, the woman spent several hours in pain during a normal delivery, the doctors did not explain the situation to her and in the end they did a caesarean section.

Maia remembered that the midwife was very insistent, sometimes gave orders and uttered commands “you need to do it, you can’t torture the child”. Labor continued for five hours, but the baby was not born.

In the sixth hour, Maia’s consciousness began to fade, her body trembled. “The doctor came and put a paper in front of me that I had to sign, and I couldn’t understand what it was and what I should do now. Then she said – if we can’t talk like that, then we will do the acute caesarean section,” said Maija .

Then everything happened in a flash, she was taken to the operating room, anesthesia was administered and the child was there within ten minutes.

However, the doctor who performed the operation admitted that “you wouldn’t have given birth to him yourself”, because the baby’s umbilical cord was very tightly wrapped around his neck.

Mistakes in communication and non-explanation of what is happening, the Maternity House acknowledges and regrets the situation that arose due to unclear and perhaps not so empathetic communication, and I apologize to the mother for the inconvenience and experiences caused, due to which the mother’s birth experience was not so positive.

According to a study published this year, 36% of surveyed women encountered a negative attitude of medical personnel during childbirth in Latvia.
