San Marino, the small republic between Romagna and the Marches, has elected its two new Captains Regent, that is its heads of state: they are Oscar Mina, a parliamentarian who had already been Captain Regent in 2009, and Paolo Rondelli, long ambassador of San Marino in the United States who thus became the first openly gay head of state in the world.

In fact, in the past there were already various heads of government belonging to the LGBT + community, such as Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar and Icelandic Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir, and others are currently in office, such as Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabić and Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel. Rondelli, however, is the first to be head of state: in San Marino the two Captains Regent, who remain in office for six months, collectively exercise both the function of heads of state and that of heads of government.

Rondelli, a parliamentarian from San Marino of the RETE Civic Movement, is 58 years old, has a degree in engineering and one in literature, and has been involved in environmental issues for a long time. He has held various government and diplomatic positions for San Marino, including that of ambassador to the United States from 2007 to 2016. He and Mina replace Francesco Mussoni and Giacomo Simoncini, who, moreover, a few days before the end of the mandate had been accused of sexual harassment by a secretary, in what had been a notable political scandal for the small country.
