The EU warns: they will take action against abuses under the Russian presidency

According to Borrell, the fact that Russia took over the presidency of the Security Council on Saturday “is a suitable joke for April Fool’s Day”.

He pointed out: “despite the fact that Russia is a permanent member of the Security Council, it constantly violates the foundations of the legal framework of the UN”.

The presidency of the Security Council rotates every month, the five permanent members and the ten non-permanent members alternate in alphabetical order. Russia last chaired the body in February 2022, when it launched a war against Ukraine.

The first meeting of the Security Council under the Russian presidency will take place on Monday morning, the leaders will decide on their monthly work program in closed-door negotiations. The Russian delegation is headed by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
