Tajik authorities have issued new dress code guidelines for women, encouraging them to respect traditional Tajik dress and refrain from the unwanted influence of both Western fashion and conservative Muslim traditions.

The authorities advise women not to wear black clothes influenced by the conservative traditions of Islam, including the hijab, referring to the guidelines, local media reported on Monday.

Women should also not walk “half-naked in European-style clothes” and wear synthetic clothing.

Tight pants, tops, mini skirts and thin clothes are not recommended.

Women should also not wear galoshes and rubber slippers in public.

The campaign “We dress in Tajik style” is running until May 30, and in the course of it, women in offices across the country are advised to wear traditional Tajik clothes. The guide also includes pictures of Tajik traditional clothes for each season.

Most of Tajikistan’s nine million people are Muslim.

However, Tajikistan’s leadership is concerned that Islamic fundamentalist ideas may spread from neighboring Afghanistan, so the field of religion is under strict control.
