Sunday afternoon, the Swedish government announced to want to apply for Swedish membership in NATO. The decision was confirmed after the favorable opinion of the Swedish Social Democratic Party, which supports the government of Magdalena Andersson. This makes it possible to have a large majority in Parliament to take the initiative forward.

The Social Democrats, traditionally opposed to NATO membership, had become more proactive in recent years and have revised their approach following Russia’s recent invasion of Ukraine, with Finland’s concomitant decision to join the military alliance.

Andersson’s government could submit a formal application to NATO early next week. However, the Social Democrats have made it clear that the application for membership will be subject to the condition that they do not have nuclear weapons on Swedish territory, nor permanent military bases managed by NATO. The entry into the most important Western military alliance would mark the end of nearly two centuries of neutrality on the part of Sweden.
