Sustainability: the how, the when and above all the why – RB

There is a lot of talk about sustainability, but not everyone knows exactly what it is. I try to explain it to you in a simple way in this post.

What is sustainability?

First of all, it is good to distinguish between two types of sustainability: environmental and social.

Environmental sustainability

In essence, environmental sustainability is the one whereby companies undertake to reduce their impact on the environment as much as possible, in terms not only of emissions, but also of waste. Furthermore, to be honest, if companies wanted to be sustainable at 100% yes they would equip to set up circular production processes. This means that any waste is treated in such a way as to be reused as raw materials: in this way, the environmental impact is further reduced.

A different thing is social sustainability: it means that the company pays attention to fair pay and decent working conditions for all its employees, not only for those who work in offices in $pe, to understand each other, but also for those who produce on the other side of the world. What if production is outsourced and the producers are subcontractors not directly dependent on the company in question? In this case, the company should carry out audits, i.e. surprise on-site investigations to see how the subcontractor is working and whether it complies with the regulations.

Ethical codes

Very often companies adopt a code of ethics, which imposes this type of checks on them: the problem is that often the checks are not carried out, or are made to carry out by certification bodies, which, perhaps, are not exactly transparent. How to do it then? It is better to buy products with a short supply chain, that is, products that are geographically produced as close as possible. This will also have a huge impact on the logistic costs of transport.

Why is it important to think about sustainability?

Finally, also thanks to the pandemic, more and more companies have realized that the consumption model adopted up to now is less and less sustainable. We are consuming the planet’s resources at a frenzied rate, much higher than that with which these same resources become available again. The overshoot day, the day when the Earth runs out of resources for the current year, is anticipated more and more every year: in the 2021 was 29 July.

It’s not just a question of reducing plastic or recycling: if something doesn’t change, our children or grandchildren may never swim in the sea again.

What can we do concretely?

In concrete terms, a lot can be done … and it takes very little.

Inquire about

Living in a sustainable way passes from a greater awareness of what our actions entail and getting informed in this sense is the first thing to do. What changes for the planet if I eat one less steak a week? What if I start using the water filter jug or water bottle instead of plastic bottles? What if I buy one less dress?

Reduce consumption

Whether we are talking about electricity or compulsive purchases, reducing consumption is essential. This will have an immediate positive impact not only on our wallet, but also on the environment: fewer unnecessary purchases made, from food to clothing, less wasted energy.

Choose with your head what to consume

Always ask yourself if there is a sustainable alternative that produces less waste. Packaging, manufacturing, transportation, packaging… all of these items are potential wastes that can be avoided. Buy from small and local businesses, do not be duped by green promotions and labels, which can be effective greenwashing maneuvers to divert your attention, making you believe that what you are buying is ethical or sustainable.

And don’t forget that sometimes even a single step is important: don’t fall into the reasoning that ” what do you want me to change , if we don’t all do it, what’s the point of only me doing it? “. It makes sense: let’s be an example, not only for our children, but also for friends and acquaintances. Good habits are contagious!
