Spotify has decided to fire the Studio 4 team, which was in charge of creating podcast content on the platform, but continues to focus on this format

13 January 2022

Spotify Studios , aka Studio 4 , was the first podcasting studio created by Spotify , on which a lot of resources have been invested and from which some good results have been obtained. In fact, shows like Amy Schumer Presents: 3 Girls 1 Keith have had a good success, attracting the interest of many listeners even from outside the platform.

Despite this, it seems that the situation was not all roses and the recent decision to fire team members would confirm this. Spotify never disclosed its intentions regarding the project, but Studio 4 offered a lot of music content and had entered into various deals with artists, celebrities and influencers. To reveal the incident would have been an employee during an interview with The Verge , who also reported that things did not go well from the start despite the good results achieved. It is not clear what the future of podcasts on Spotify will be and we will have to wait for an official clarification.

Spotify Studios , what happened

According to the employee’s report to The Verge, Spotify has decided to dissolve its proprietary podcast studio, Spotify Studios. The team consisted of approximately 15 employees and was involved in the production of shows such as Dissect and Chapo: Kingpin on Trial .

The dismissal of many of them – including the firm’s number one, Gina Delvac – should take effect from 21 January , while some will be reassigned to other duties. All this would have happened through a phone call last Friday, with which the company communicated the interruption of the relationship.

Although Spotify often advertises its podcasting efforts, it has rarely mentioned Studio 4 to the press, a sign that relationships have never been idyllic.

Spotify Studios, what the leaders say

For the moment, no official comments have been released from Spotify, but Julie McNamara – who heads Studios & Video in the United States – has confirmed the happened, stating that this will accelerate the pace on more ambitious projects .

According to the employee interviewed by The Verge, Spotify’s top executives have never expressed appreciation for the content created by Studio 4. Yet the company has spent millions to buy studios and networks and make sure deals with big names like Joe Rogan, Alex Cooper and Dax Shepard.

For the moment, it is unclear whether partner programs and shows currently in production will move forward and clarifications are awaited from Spotify. In recent times, however, Spotify has repeatedly made it clear that it intends to focus a lot on podcasts .
