Lithuania once again extended the state of emergency on the Russian and Belarusian border
Citing the war in Ukraine and illegal migration, the Lithuanian parliament on Tuesday extended the state of emergency in the border area with Russia and Belarus until May 2.
The parliament approved the previous decision of the Lithuanian government. The state of emergency was ordered after the start of the war in Ukraine on February 24 last year.
NATO member Lithuania borders the territory of Kaliningrad, which belongs to Russia but is territorially separated from it, and Belarus. Together with the two other Baltic states, Estonia and Latvia, which are also NATO members, Vilnius also strongly criticizes the Russian intervention.
The measure initially covered the entire country, but was later limited to the border zone and some checkpoints, such as airports and train stations. It enables the authorities to prioritize the protection of buildings and infrastructure of strategic importance, the increased control of vehicles and civilians moving near the borders, the return of illegal immigrants, it also links border crossing to a visa and significantly restricts the entry of Russian citizens.
The state of emergency in the area of the Belarusian border has been in effect since November 2021, since thousands of migrants tried to enter the territory of the European Union illegally there. (MTI)
Kremlin: Moscow does not recognize the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court
Russia does not recognize the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court in The Hague, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Tuesday.
Peskov responded to the report of The New York Times – referring to officials who spoke anonymously – according to which the court in The Hague intends to initiate proceedings against Russia in the near future related to two Russian “war crimes” committed in Ukraine.
We do not recognize this court, we do not recognize the jurisdiction of this court. This is what we think about it
– said Peskov.
He reminded him that for years neither this nor any other international institution bothered to deal with the destruction of civilian infrastructure by Ukrainian “nationalists” and the killing of civilians in the Donets Basin.
The International Criminal Court, which was established on the basis of the 1998 Rome Statute, is not part of the UN and is only accountable to countries that have ratified the document. Russia (signed but not ratified), the United States (signed but later withdrew its signature) and China (did not sign) did not accede to the statute.
In 2016, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree confirming that Russia would not become a member of the International Criminal Court. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the court “did not live up to expectations and did not become a truly independent body of international justice.”
Konstantin Kosachev, the deputy speaker of the upper house of the Russian parliament, pointed out on Monday on his Telegram channel that since Russia has not been a party to the Rome Statute since 2016, the International Criminal Court has no jurisdiction over it. Speaking to TASSZ, he stated that the court cannot make a decision against Russia, “but it will try”.
In his argument, the politician pointed out that 123 states have joined the Rome Statute, of which 25 are NATO countries or their allies, “who are financing the war in Ukraine and arming the Kyiv regime in order to commit international crimes.” According to the senator, these same countries “privatized” the secretariat of the court, filling it with their own citizens.
The International Criminal Court is NATO-style justice. However, the United States is not subject to the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court
– emphasized the politician.
Koszacsov described the board’s judicial practice as selective. He also complained that the court never gave a legal assessment of the “criminal acts” committed by the Ukrainian state since 2014, despite the fact that Articles 6-9 of the Rome Statute its articles can be applied to mass murders, violations of the means and methods of warfare, torture of prisoners of war, biological experiments and other crimes.
He recalled that the entire previous practice of the court focused on African countries, exercising jurisdiction in cases in Congo, Uganda, the Central African Republic, Sudan, Kenya, Libya, Mali, and the Ivory Coast.
More than a billion dollars were spent on all of this. In 2016, many African Union countries followed Russia’s lead and denounced the Rome Statute. The International Criminal Court is a tool of neo-colonialism in the hands of the West
– said Konstantin Kosachov.

Football-Russia-Asia The Russian national team was invited to the first Central Asian Football Championship
The Russian national football team was invited to the first ever Central Asian Championship in June.
In addition to the Russians banned from the international (FIFA) and European (UEFA) events due to the war in Ukraine, seven more teams, Tajik, Uzbek, Turkmen, Kyrgyz, Afghan, Iranian and a country to be named later, will participate in the regional at the tournament. The matches will be held in the Kyrgyz capital, Bishkek, and the Uzbek capital, Tashkent.
The Tajik federation indicated that the Russians had already accepted the invitation, but the Russian side said for the time being that they are “discussing the participation of the national team and the conditions of participation.”
If the Russians really start in the Central Asian championship, it foretells that the Russian federation will indeed move from the European to the Asian federation and will participate in the championships of that continent in the future.
