Becoming a policeman involves great responsibility as it means taking on the role of a public officer and member of the Armed Forces. A police officer has the important task of controlling the territory in order to counter potential criminal actions that could endanger public safety.

Since, as just mentioned, the responsibilities of a policeman are particularly important, specific requirements, physical and not only, are required of those who wish to join the Police. Nevertheless, there is no shortage of requests and, therefore, passing the public competition to become a policeman is certainly not an easy task. To do this it is necessary, first of all, to know perfectly the bureaucratic process required to participate in the selection and all the individual tests that must be passed.

This special guide, designed specifically to remove any doubts in this sense, cannot but start from an in-depth study dedicated to the particular organization of the Italian State Police.

The organization of the State Police

The State Police reports directly to the Department of Public Security of the Ministry of the Interior. At the head of this department there is, not surprisingly, the Chief of Police and Director General of Public Security, that is the prefect .

The head of the State Police is flanked by three other prefects, who assume the title of Deputy Chief of Police. More precisely, they are:

The Deputy Director general for the performance of vicarious functions; The deputy general manager for coordination and planning activities; The Deputy Director General, Central Director of the Central Directorate of the Criminal Police. The State Police is organized in central and territorial offices . What to do to become a policeman

The Public Competition for Police Officers is a fundamental, necessary and essential step for anyone intending to become a policeman. Starting from 2016, civilians can also participate in this type of competition. Previously, in fact, these competitions were reserved exclusively for those who had served in the Armed Forces. Today, however, only a part of the Allievi Agenti di Polizia is recruited from the VFP1 (i.e. the volunteers on a fixed-term basis of one year) and the VFP4 (the volunteers on a fixed-term basis for four years), while the remaining part of the places foreseen by the competitions is reserved for all Italian citizens in possession of the required requisites.

To participate in the Public Competition for Police Agents Students it is essential to check the notices that are published periodically by the Ministry of the Interior in the Official Gazette of the Italian Republic. The selections for VFP1 and VFP4 are published in the “Competitions” section on the website of the Ministry of Defense.

The application form to the competition to become a policeman must be filled out only and exclusively online on the recruitment portal of the Department of Public Security, within 30 days from the day following the publication of the notice in the Official Gazette. The Public Competition for Police Agents Students is divided into:

a written test; a physical test; a series of psycho-physical and aptitude tests; the valuation of the securities. The winners of the competition must then undergo a training period lasting 6 months at a Police Academy in State. In the event that the course is successfully passed, applicants begin a 6-month period as probationary agents, after which they are appointed Effective Agents and assigned to a Department or Office not in their region of residence.

After 5 years of permanence in the rank of Agent, through a mechanism of advancement by seniority, it is possible to achieve the rank of Chosen Agent (also the subsequent degrees of Assistant and Chief Assistant are achieved, every 5 years, through the same mechanism).

What are the requirements to become a policeman

As already mentioned, there are several requirements that you need to have if you want to become a policeman. First of all, it should be noted that all Italian citizens, both men and women, who are over the age of 18 years and under 30 (the maximum limit is raised up to 3 years for who has served in the military).

Furthermore, candidates must:

have the full enjoyment of civil and political rights; have a high school diploma upper secondary school (middle school diploma) or an equivalent qualification; obtain physical, mental and aptitude fitness. Furthermore, candidates must NOT:

be been expelled from the Armed Forces or dismissed or dismissed from public offices; have had prison sentences for non-culpable crime and have not been subjected to safety or prevention measures. All the requirements must be possessed by the candidate on the expiry date of the application for participation in the competition and must be maintained by the same until the end of the competition procedure (except for the age requirement).

How the competition of the State Police works

During the test, candidates cannot communicate with each other either verbally or in writing and cannot relate to anyone other than the members of the examining commission or the supervisors. Furthermore, it is not possible to use mobile phones, radios, calculators or other electronic, IT or telematic tools.

At the end of the written test phase, a list of candidates is drawn up in descending order with the relative marks obtained. The written test is deemed to have been passed in the event of a minimum score of 6 out of 10.

The physical test of the Public Competition for Police Officers is divided into a series of mandatory exercises aimed at ascertaining the degree of athletic preparation of the candidates. The exercises to be performed are, more precisely, the run of 1000 meters, the high jump and pushups. All tests have sex-differentiated parameters. Failure to pass only one of the three aforementioned exercises will result in the candidate being excluded from the competition.

Participants in the Public Competition for Student Police Agents must present themselves at this stage with suitable sports clothing and a valid identification document and must present a certificate of competitive sports fitness for athletics.

The psychophysical and aptitude tests provided for by the Public Competition for Student Police Officers for those who have passed the first two phases are aimed at ascertaining the psychophysical suitability of candidates and their possession of the aptitude requisites and qualities indispensable to cover the role of State Police Officer and to carry out the duties envisaged by this role. Candidates undergo a clinical examination, a psychic evaluation and instrumental and laboratory tests. They must show:
