Hoffenheim parted ways with manager Andre Breitenreiter on Sunday in the wake of a 5-2 Bundesliga collapse in Bochum that sent them into the relegation fight.
The move, reported by German media, came after a recent defeat extended the side’s winless run to 10 games as they are just three points above the danger zone.
Breitenreiter arrived in the summer after guiding Zürich to the Swiss league title. Lui had a promising start to the Bundesliga season as the team won three of their first four matches.
But they have since faded dramatically, winning just two of their next 15 Bundesliga games, knocked out in the German Cup mid-week, as their ambitions to play in Europe have effectively ended.
The manager had criticized the team after the heavy defeat in Bochum, saying: “I can’t accept what I saw today. It has nothing to do with professional football.”
Sporting director Alexander Rosen acknowledged that a look at the bigger picture rather than Breitenreiter may be needed, while midfielder Sebastian Rudy said “we have to stick together as a team, it’s not the manager’s fault.”
