Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois returned to training on Wednesday after being ruled out of the recent Copa del Rey win against Cacareno with a minor injury.

Courtois probably would not have played in Caceres in western Spain anyway, having rarely been used in the competition in recent years. But the Belgian didn’t make the trip as a precaution.

Courtois kept a clean sheet against Real Valladolid last Friday in the Blancos’ last game of 2022 and first game since the World Cup. He is now expected to start against Villarreal on Saturday.

Dani Carvajal and Mariano Diaz both trained individually indoors on Wednesday, but Brand reported that both are still on track to make the team at the weekend.

real Madrid he returned level on points with Barcelona at the top of La Liga after the last round of matches, making up for a sensational defeat to Rayo Vallecano in November by capitalizing on Barça’s failure to beat Espanyol in the city derby.

When Madrid travel to the east coast at the weekend, Carlo Ancelotti will expect a better quality pitch than the one his side played on against Cacareno.

“We couldn’t play as we had planned due to the pitch conditions,” Ancelotti said at the time.

“We’re not used to playing like this but I’m satisfied with the performance. It’s difficult to fully evaluate the match as it was difficult to play due to the pitch. You can’t play football like this. This is not football and the stadium needs more work. Such things should be monitored by officials.
