Microsoft offers an authentication application with which it is possible to log in to an account securely without having to enter a password. Here’s how to use it.

If you happen to have to log in to your Microsoft account several times a day, and have to enter your login password each time, there is a solution to save you time and secure your account by adding an extra layer of security.

This solution is Authenticator. This is an authentication application that allows, when configured, to do without a password to log in to your Microsoft accounts. When you enter your ID on a sign-in page for one of the Microsoft services, a notification is automatically sent to your smartphone. All you have to do is validate the sign in request from the Authenticator mobile app to sign in to your Microsoft account without having to enter your password.

Note that the Authenticator app on your smartphone is automatically locked and requires the use of the unlock method configured on your smartphone to open it: unlock code, facial recognition identification, fingerprint reader, etc. Here’s how to set it up.

1. Access your Microsoft account login options

Open your favorite web browser and go to your Microsoft account login page

Log in using your email address and password, then when you arrive at the main page of your Microsoft account, click Update in the Security section.

Then click Getting started in the Advanced Security Options box. A login page to your account is displayed, then enter your password and click Sign in to validate access to the security settings.

2. Add a verification mode

You should now be on the Methods page for proving who you are.

To configure Authenticator with your Microsoft account, click the Add a new sign-in or verification method option.

In the pop-up that appears, choose to Use an app and go to step 3.

3. Install Authenticator

Download the Authenticator app on your smartphone. The application, which is available on Android as well as on iOS, is free and will allow you to validate the connection to your Microsoft account using your smartphone, without having to enter your connection password.

4. Configure Microsoft Authenticator

Open Microsoft Authenticator on your smartphone and tap I agree to accept the app’s privacy statement. Then tap Sign in with Microsoft

If your Microsoft account is already set up on your smartphone, the app should detect it automatically. Tap on it to select it and link it to the app.

Otherwise, tap Add account and enter your email address and password to complete the connection.

Your Microsoft account is now configured in Authenticator. You can therefore use this solution to validate the connection to your Microsoft account when you want to log in from another device.

5. Connect your Microsoft account with Authenticator

Go to a login page for one of the Microsoft services, your mailbox for example, and enter your username. Normally, if the Authenticator has been configured correctly, you should not be prompted for your password.

Instead, a notification was sent to your smartphone. Open it and follow the instructions to validate the connection to your account.
