A couple of days ago a large sandstorm from the African Sahara desert has arrived in Spain, covering the sky of different areas of the country with an unusual orange haze. This sandstorm is an atmospheric phenomenon called in Spanish calima, which usually concerns the Canary Islands, which are part of Spain but are located off the coast of northwestern Africa.

This year, however, the phenomenon was so intense that it reached mainland Spain: it even reached the central areas of the country, for example in the capital Madrid. In some areas, the sandstorm was accompanied by rains that poured sand onto the ground, causing mud to build up on the streets.

The Spanish meteorological service has defined the phenomenon as “extraordinary” and the authorities of various cities have advised the population to reduce outdoor activities due to the marked deterioration in air quality due to the sand.
