Photo ⟩ The snow cover in Riga is the thickest since last December, forecasters report

On Saturday, the thickness of the snow cover in the center of the capital increased to 19 centimeters, and the previous time such a deep snow in Riga was in the middle of December last year, according to the data of the Latvian Center for Environment, Geology and Meteorology.

On Saturday, the thickness of the snow cover in the center of the capital increased to 19 centimeters, and the previous time such a deep snow in Riga was in the middle of December last year, according to the data of the Latvian Center for Environment, Geology and Meteorology.

Before that, there was a thicker snow cover in Riga in 2021 – in February of that year, the maximum snow thickness reached 28 centimeters, in December there was a 25 centimeter thick snow layer. On the other hand, in 2010 and the beginning of 2011, the snow depth in Riga reached 60 centimeters, in 2010, even in the middle of March, the capital was covered with a 60-centimeter layer of snow.

Since Saturday morning, the thickness of snow in the capital has increased by eight centimeters.

In Dobele observation station it increased from zero to ten centimeters, in Madona – from 33 to 41 centimeters, in Gulbene – from 23 to 30 centimeters, in other observation stations the change in snow thickness was smaller.

Most of Latvia is covered with 5-35 centimeters of snow, in places in Vidzeme and Latgale the snow is deeper. The thickest snow cover at observation stations on Saturday evening is 49 centimeters in Alūksne and Dagda, as well as 54 centimeters in Priekuli.

Forecasters predict that the snow will melt rapidly in the first half of next week and flooding of the lower areas is possible.
