Pamukkale, an amazing cotton castle in Turkey

Its name in Turkish means cotton castle, and this is what this natural wonder looks like, located an hour by plane from Istanbul, in the Denizli region, in the southwest of the country.

A white and spongy mountain of lime located in the middle of a serene and very green valley, that of the Menderes River, whose blue waters, resting on natural terraces of limestone and travertine formed over the centuries, cascade. 

Waters that have healing powers, thanks to their high concentration of minerals. 

The place, together with the ancient Hellenistic city of Hierapolis, is declared a World Heritage Site.

At the top of Pamukkale, 160 meters high, the ancient city of Hierapolis was built , today in ruins.

The appearance of the numerous thermal springs, of waters rich in minerals  creta, quartzites, crystalline marbles…  but also bicarbonate and calcium, is due to tectonic movements in this area that also caused frequent earthquakes.

According to the Greeks of the ancient region of Phrygia, the gods endowed these waters with therapeutic properties.

The Pluto cave of Hierapolis was so named, because it was thought that it was the god of the underworld who caused everyone who entered it to die gassed, when in fact it was due to underground volcanic activity, which leaked carbon dioxide.

The Hierve el Agua waterfall , in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, is, along with Pamukkale, the only waterfall of its kind in the world.
