According to the American diplomat, the two sides should pay attention to settling the situation, now the question is not whether they mutually recognize each other, or whether Serbia recognizes the independence of Kosovo.

Kosovo unilaterally declared its independence from Serbia in 2008, but Belgrade has refused to recognize it ever since and continues to consider the area, which is mostly inhabited by Albanians, as its southern province.

According to the latest proposal aimed at settling the situation – which both sides called acceptable in principle at the end of February – Serbia would no longer obstruct Kosovo’s admission to international organizations, and Kosovo would establish the Community of Serbian Municipalities of Kosovo, which ensures the self-government of the Kosovo Serbs. In addition, Belgrade and Pristina would recognize each other’s diplomas, passports, license plates and other official documents.

According to Gabriel Escobar, the agreement would not only bring significant benefits to the two countries involved, but could accelerate the economic development of the entire Western Balkan region.
