Legendary playmaker Maxi Moralez will leave NYCFC this winter to join Argentine side Racing Club, the club announced on Friday.

Moralez has been with New York since 2017, joining from Liga MX side Leon after spells in Europe with Atalanta and FC Moscow.

The former Argentina international made 194 appearances NYCFC in all competitions, scoring 36 goals and providing 60 assists, helping the club recover mls Cup and Campeones Cup titles.

Moralez is regarded as one of the greatest players in the club’s history and walks away with legendary status intact. Now, the 35-year-old returns to the club where his professional career began.

“My family and I have decided to return to Argentina, my country, after a long time. It was a very difficult and personal decision for me, one of the toughest decisions of my career because of what we have accomplished together here. I’m happy here and from day one the fans have made me feel like one of them. Those memories combined with this city, the best city in the world, made this decision extremely difficult,” Moralez said in a statement.

“Racing is where I started, they raised me, many years ago they gave me the opportunity to play professional football and be in the position I am today. It was a dream of mine, of my children and my family, to see me play Racing and I would like it to come true for them.

“NYCFC has been six years of my life that I have enjoyed immensely, with so much happiness, with achievements and defeats, but I have always been so happy here playing for this club. NYCFC is the club with my longest stay, which makes me so proud because it’s a big club, in a big city and being here is like being part of a big family.”

Few, if any, players have made as impression on the NYCFC as Moralez, whose performance levels have never dipped despite his advanced age. The Cityzens will now turn their attention to finding a replacement who can match his level.

“It has been a real pleasure to have been able to know and work with Maxi – said sporting director David Lee in a club press release – No one can deny the significant impact he has had over the past six seasons, he will always have had a status legendary in the Club and among our fans as he has given us so many fantastic memories. In addition to his incredible ability, he has been a true professional since day one and a role model for our young players.

“Maxi has earned his place in the history of this club. He will always be remembered in New York as an incredible player whose presence and leadership were instrumental in winning our first silverware. We understand that it has always been Maxi’s dream to return to Argentina and we know this has been an extremely difficult decision for him. We will miss him, but in the end we want the best for him and his family ”.
