French President Emmanuel Macron will deliver his first address to the nation since parliamentary elections on Wednesday evening, when his liberal coalition jointly lost an absolute majority in the National Assembly.

Since then, there has been traffic in and out of the Elysée for various party leaders – including the leaders of the left-wing Nupes alliance and the far-right National Assembly, who have both made successful choices – for individual meetings with Macron.

Fabien Roussel of the Communist Party and the National Assembly Marine Le Pen said that during the meetings Macron raised the idea of a coalition government. He himself did not comment on his plans.

If Macron fails to secure a majority, the reforms he has planned for his second term are threatened, including an increase in the retirement age.

The last time a president did not gain majority support in the National Assembly was after the 1997 elections.

Macron will give a televised speech starting at 20.00.
