The Liga MX Clausura 2023 is well underway.
Week three of the tournament saw several surprises, including a shocking Rogelio Funes Mori hat-trick that inspired Rayados de Monterrey’s 3-1 win over Atletico San Luis. Elsewhere, Pachuca continued their dominance with a 4-1 win against FC Juarez, while the Pumas rallied after a turbulent week off the pitch.
Here’s everything you missed this weekend in Liga MX…
Before even taking the field, Pumas UNAM held a press conference to announce the termination of Dani Alves’ contract with the club. Pumas president Leopoldo Silva has firmly stated that his actions were not in line with the team’s values.
“With the information that occurred today about the legal process that the player Dani Alves is facing and for which he is detained in Spain, we have decided to communicate the following: Club Universidad Nacional has taken the decision to terminate the employment contract with Dani Alves from today onwards,” said Pumas president Leopoldo Silva.
“With this decision, the club reaffirms its commitment not to tolerate acts by any member of our institution, whoever they may be, contrary to the university spirit and its values.”
The team then took the field on Sunday against Club Leon, the third match of the Liga MX Clausura 2023. Pumas wasted no time, gaining the early lead in the 9th minute of the match with a goal from Gustavo Javier del Prete.
Leon managed to equalize in the first half, before Pumas scored three more in the second 45 minutes to triumph 4-1. The team now sit fourth in the table, with six points from three games.
2. Club America extends winless streak
Club America has yet to win a game in 2023 Liga MX Closure.
The team drew 2-2 against Puebla on Saturday night at the Estadio Azteca, propelling the Eagles to three straight games without a win. Goals from Alejandro Zendejas and Henry Martin initially put Club America ahead, before they were canceled out by efforts from Gaston Silva and Emanuel Gularte to earn a point for each side.
But with just three points from their last three games, America coach Fernando Ortiz insists the team is not in “crisis mode” yet.
“I don’t see the crisis, it’s something of a concern to call, yes, compared to the goals they are scoring against us, but otherwise I’m calm,” he said.
“It’s a difficult start, but we have to keep working. It’s the only solution, we sometimes have good things but we can’t have those oversights; above all, we have to exploit everything we have and below cannot allow it definitively”. added striker Henry Martin.
3. Pachuca reigns
Pachuca continues to amaze, leaving behind the ‘curse’ of the reigning champions.
The Apertura 2022 winners triumphed 4-1 over FC Juarez on Sunday, extending their dominance in the Clausura 2023. Young Mexico international prospect Mauricio Isais started the scoring for Pachuca, followed by goals from defender José Castillo Pérez and striker Roberto de la Rosa.
The victory comes just days after Pachuca saw their top scorer Nico Ibáñez move to Tigres. The departure has forced Pachuca coach Guillermo Almada to find new options in attack, looking at young figures and players in the academy. And the team did not disappoint.
