Re-candidacy for the position of President is a matter for politicians, President Egils Levits emphasized in an interview on TV3 program “900 seconds”, confirming that he had informal talks about re-election.

The official does not agree with the statement that he is currently acting more actively because the presidential elections are approaching. “I work all the time, and my schedule is full until July 8, when my mandate ends,” said Levitt, adding that after the end of his mandate, he can do science, comment and analyze politics as an ordinary citizen, “which is also good and an interesting opportunity”.

“Would I be a candidate for the next term – I don’t know that, it’s a matter for politicians. Politicians are currently thinking about it more actively. Let’s see what’s there,” said Levits, revealing that a number of politicians have already spoken to him, but the talks were unofficial .

“I will not speculate, speculating in this case is the task of politicians, journalists, sofa experts, but not my task. We will see what decision the relevant parties and factions will make,” said Levits about his possible candidacy for the high office.

Answering the question whether he himself would like to hold the position of President again, Levits noted that so far no formal offer to run has come from politicians, but the answer could be only to such a formal offer. “It has been discussed informally, but I don’t want to interfere so that the parties decide it themselves,” added the President, emphasizing that if the parties believe that entrusting him with the position would be “meaningful and good”, he should do so, but “if there is another solution, the ordinary citizen also has his advantages”.

Commenting on the rumors on social media about possible kompromat against him, Levits emphasized that such compromising information should not exist, because “it is all either fiction or malicious interpretations”, which he does not pay attention to.

“Politicians have to reckon with it, and unfortunately it belongs to the political process. I don’t pay attention to it, and reasonable people don’t pay attention to it, because it’s nonsense to try to influence something. Latvian society and politicians are reasonable enough to distinguish between are frivolous claims,” said Levits.
