Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has been ruled out of the United Cup with an ankle problem, complicating his preparations for the Australian Open which starts on 16 January.
The 27-year-old left the field as late as possible before retiring from the event as of Thursday after picking up an injury at an exhibition in Dubai last week.
Last year’s Wimbledon runner-up was due to face Rafa Nadal in the mixed team event.
“We had hoped he would be able to compete but sadly not,” United Cup director Stephen Farrow told the Herald newspaper on Wednesday.
“These things happen in tennis, especially when there are two weeks before a grand slam.”
