Kim Potter guilty of manslaughter in Daunte Wright’s death..Wright’s mother, Katie Bryant, said after the trial that she felt “every emotion she can imagine” as she read the verdict. “I let out a yelp because it was built in anticipation of what was going to happen,” she said.

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, whose office prosecuted the case, said he took into account Wright’s death.

“Accountability is not justice. Justice is restoration. Justice would bring Daunte back to life and make the Wright family whole again,” he added.

The verdict follows a closely followed two-week trial, crowned by Potter’s turn on the witness stand, where she sobs remembering the shooting and says she was “so sorry” about what happened.

Whether Potter intended to shoot her taser or her pistol was not up for debate in the lawsuit. Lawyers on both sides agreed that she mistakenly fired the wrong gun. Instead, the trial focused on whether she would have to admit she was holding the heavier metal gun or whether she should have fired any weapon.

Legal experts told Insider that prosecutors used part of Potter’s testimony to make the former Minnesota police officer look negligent to jurors.

Potter, who has since resigned from the force, has said she meant to grab her stun gun when she shot Wright during a traffic stop in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. Body-camera footage played for the jury shows Potter shooting Wright in the chest while shouting the warning, “Taser!” The footage then shows Potter shout, “Shit! I shot him,” before collapsing to the ground and saying, “I’m going to prison.”

The former police officer who said she mistook her gun for her Taser when she fatally shot a man during a traffic stop in a Minneapolis suburb was convicted of two counts of manslaughter on Thursday, a rare guilty verdict for a police officer that is likely to send her to prison for years.

The jury deliberated across four days before agreeing on guilty verdicts for Kimberly Potter, a 49-year-old white woman who testified that she had never fired her gun in her 26 years on the police force in Brooklyn Center, Minn., until she shot a single bullet into the chest of Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old Black man who had been driving to a carwash in April.

The conviction of former Minnesota police officer Kim Potter in the fatal shooting of Daunte Wright would not have happened just a few years ago, according to legal experts surprised by the jury’s verdict.

Potter, who is White, was found guilty Thursday of first- and second-degree manslaughter in her killing of Wright when she said she mistakenly shot the 20-year-old Black man with a gun instead of a Taser. Potter, 49, had pleaded not guilty to the charges.

During a police stop on April 11 in Brooklyn Center, near Minneapolis, officers learned Wright had an outstanding warrant and tried to arrest him. As Wright tried to flee the scene, Potter yelled, “Taser, Taser” and instead pulled out her gun and fatally shot him.
