Microplastics are a major environmental pollution problem. Scientists have calculated this every day we eat an average of 5 grams of plastic – how much does the credit card weigh. Microplastic is found in get in virgin places and even reached Everest.

Scientists have also found it in the human placenta. An article describing the research findings was published last year in the journal Environment International. The placentae of four healthy women were then examined, who reported their pregnancies and gave birth to babies without any problems. The researchers only analyzed 4 percent. organ surface and found a dozen microplastic particles approximately 0.01 mm in size. It had already been suggested at the time that these particles could be transported into the bloodstream.

Another 2021 rat study found that microplastics in the lungs of pregnant rats can end up in embryos.

Microplasty first found in the blood

Recent studies have shown that microplastics can also be present in everyone’s blood – reports “The Guardian”. Researchers from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in the Netherlands tested blood samples from 22 anonymous adult donors. Microplastics were found in 17 of them. This is the first time that such a contamination has been identified in human blood.

Half of the samples contained PET plastic, used for example for the production of bottles. One in three had Styrofoam used for packaging food and other products. Polyethylene is found in every fourth blood sample, which is used to make plastic shopping bags.

Previous research has shown that babies and young children are more prone to plastic contamination. In their feces, the level of microplastics was ten times higher. Further research on the subject has already begun, and is being conducted by various groups of scientists and on a larger number of people.

Where does microplastics come from?

The main source of microplastics is waste, especially waste that does not end up in the sorting plant and is not processed. During the biodegradation process, plastic breaks down into smaller and smaller particles. Eventually they reach a size small enough to penetrate groundwater, rivers, seas and oceans.

Some cosmetics or abrasives are another source of microplastics. It also forms as a by-product during the manufacture of other items. Microplastics come in the form of fine particles and fibers. The European Chemicals Agency reports that pollutants of this type consist of a mixture of various types of resins and polymers.
