In Turkey, ahead of the May elections, opposition presidential candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu has taken the lead in opinion polls ahead of the current head of state, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Kilicdaroglu is supported by approximately 56% of those polled, while Erdogan is supported by only 44%, according to Europe Elects.
It has already been announced that early parliamentary and presidential elections are planned for May 14 in Turkey.
The National Alliance represented by Kilicdaroglu, in which six opposition parties have united, has come out on top in the party popularity rating. About 44% of the respondents are ready to vote for it, while about 38% of voters support the Islamist party “Justice and Development” (AKP) represented by Erdogan.
The People’s Democratic Party (HDP)-led Labor and Freedom Alliance, which is centre-left and left-leaning, is supported by 11% to 12% of respondents.
Despite the opposition’s positive poll results, there are concerns that Erdogan will be ready to let go of the reins of power if he loses the election.
Erdogan’s administration has faced accusations of undermining democratic norms in recent years. Critics say Erdogan has consolidated power and suppressed political opposition.
