The bells of the church of Sant’Oswaldo in Marktl, Bavaria, rang on Thursday at 11 to celebrate the funeral of Benedict XVI, even though mass was not celebrated.

The German Bishops’ Conference had recommended that the 27 Catholic dioceses in Germany allow a period of national mourning around 11 local time.

The former pope was originally from Germany and was born in Marktl, before taking on the role of head of the Catholic Church.

He was buried in the Vatican on Thursday.
