On Thursday, the Daugava water level in Daugavpils had reached 7.51 meters above the zero mark of the station, thus the orange warning about potential floods was announced in the city.
“The situation has not changed and the warning is still valid. Currently, the water level reaches 7.54 meters according to the actual situation, but we expect the water level to decrease in the near future,” said Rasis.
At present, there is no threat to people’s lives and homes, and evacuation of residents has not been necessary.
“The groundwater level has also risen and some wells in the private sector are overflowing,” Rasis added.
Also, one section of Camps Street is still closed in the city.
Rasis is inclined to believe that the water level could start to drop already tonight. “Saturday should really decrease,” the official added.
Orange warning means: be prepared to protect yourself and your property. Flooding of property and transport infrastructure is possible. Electricity and water supply, telecommunication communications may be disrupted. Evacuation may be necessary. Residents are advised not to visit or travel in flood-prone areas.
Municipal services are on duty 24 hours a day. The municipal police included in the patrol routes all places recognized as potentially dangerous and regularly inform the organizer of civil defense, communal services and the management of the municipality about the results of the survey. In case it is found that there is a danger of flooding somewhere, the responsible services will immediately react and take all necessary measures.
On the other hand, the red warning can be announced when the water level reaches 8.8 meters above the zero mark. According to forecasters, such a high water level is not expected in Daugavpils.
