Minister of Defense Ināra Mūrniece (NA) hopes that it will be possible to agree on a unified coalition support for Egil Levits before the presidential elections.

She admitted this this morning in an interview with the TV3 program “900 seconds”.

According to her, all other options are currently very abstract, including the holding of the second round of elections and possible other candidates.

Mūrniece did not answer the question whether she herself would be ready to run for office, as there is currently no such situation where it would be relevant.

Mūrniece emphasized that the council of the National Union (NA) unanimously decided to nominate Levita for re-election as President. All members of the NA faction of the Saeima, who will have to vote in the presidential elections, are also ready to vote for Levitas.

The NA representative stated that Levitt’s priorities are defense and security, strengthening the rule of law, Latvian Latvia and support for Ukraine.

She emphasized Levitt’s great contribution in strengthening the international position of providing maximum support to Ukraine. Mūrniece, for example, had the opportunity to watch Levit’s speech at the Munich Security Conference, where she made sure that the international community and officials of other countries listen to Levit with great respect, including regarding the creation of an international tribunal for the crimes committed by Russia in Ukraine.

As reported, so far the businessman, founder of “Apvienėta saraksta” (AS) Uldis Pīlēns, has also announced his ambition to run for the position of President. Apart from the AS, a number of opposition politicians have expressed their support for him, however, a stable majority of votes in the elections is not certain for Pilens.

“New unity” also promises support to Levit.

The presidential elections in the Saeima will be held on the last day of May.
