About 20% of young people who have applied to the State Defense Service (SDS) could be rejected due to health problems, said the head of the Recruitment and Selection Center, Major Rihards Rozenbaums, in an interview with Latvian Television (LTV) program “Morning Panorama”.

He explained that currently 488 young people have applied, who have expressed a voluntary desire to start SAD. The selection process is still ongoing. The exact number of young people will be known in the second half of June.

“It should be expected that there will be a dropout, it could be about 20%, but it might be higher or lower, but with that we expect that about 20% to 25% will drop out due to health,” emphasized Rosenbaum.

It has already been reported that on April 5, the Saeima adopted the State Defense Service Law, setting the obligation to serve in the SAD for every male citizen of Latvia within one year after reaching the age of 18, or within one year after graduating from an educational institution, but no later than until the age of 24. At the same time, it is determined that Latvian citizens and women between the ages of 18 and 27 can voluntarily apply for SAD.

The first enlistment will start the service on July 1 on a voluntary basis.

Persons subject to the SAD, who cannot perform national defense military service due to their thoughts, conscience or religious beliefs, may be replaced by national defense civil service.
