Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has no deal to join Barcelona as a free agent in the summer, but his future beyond this season remains “open”.
Gundogan, who is on course to play his 300th game for City in the next two months, is nearing the end of the four-year contract he signed in the summer of 2019.
The 32-year-old City The captaincy is still an important player for Pep Guardiola, who has started 31 times in all competitions so far this season as the club pursue a third successive Premier League title and an elusive maiden Champions League triumph.
But with no new contract agreed, it has led to uncertainty over where he will play next season. In Spain he has already speculated about an agreement with Barcelona, whose continuous financial limits continue to make the free agent market an important area to focus on.
The player’s agent and uncle, Ilhan Gundogan, has denied that an agreement has been reached.
“There is definitely no agreement with any club yet,” Ilhan said.

“Where Ilkay will play next season is still open,” the agent added.
While not yet having an agreement with Barcelona, 90 minutes understands that negotiations are underway. City are aware and are not unhappy with the situation because he is ready to let Gundogan decide his next step. The club would be happy for him to stay on, but would equally wish him well after seven years of service if he decides now is the time to move on.
90 minutes also revealed in October that Bayern Munich are keeping a close eye on Gundogan’s situation.
Gundogan left his home country to play for England in 2016, after making his name at Nuremberg and then becoming a star at Borussia Dortmund, for whom he scored in the 2013 Champions League final.
